Cloud Native Day Tel Aviv 2018 – The first conference of its kind in Israel!

That’s a wrap! The first ever Cloud Native Day conference in Israel is now behind us and we had such a great time seeing old friends and making new ones. As you may know, this event started out as OpenStack Day Israel about 6 years ago. From there, the community has grown leaps and bounds, and some technologies have adapted and newer ones have really taken hold. In changing this event to fit a larger spectrum of technologies, we wanted to bring together more great folks that wanted the same exciting event but with a look into the future of a number of important forward-looking cloud technologies.
Before we get into the highlights and lineup of this stellar conference, we first want to thank the generous sponsors of the event JFrog, IBM, Kontron, Mellanox and our community sponsors KubeMQ, Soluto, IsraelClouds, Aqua, and IamOnDemand.

Keynotes

We were very fortunate to have two really great keynote speakers for this inaugural cloud native event: Rona Segev, Managing Partner of TLV Partners and Aaron Wolf, Mathematics and computer programming teacher at Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Rona’s talk focused on how the evolution of cloud native technologies is comparable to the evolution of life on this planet into more complex systems that need to be managed with more intelligent systems. Aaron gave us the powerful story of how he became a teacher for disadvantaged youth in the inner city of Cleveland, Ohio. His story involves learning how to program and trying to help these young adults get a good education despite the difficult external problems.

Workshops

Another key to this great event were the three superb workshops, all related to containers, that were given by some of Israel’s leading DevOps ninjas. We had Tal Neeman of IBM teach attendees how to deploy an application on a Kubernetes cluster, Eran Bibi of Aqua Security walk users through using a Kubernetes cluster to orchestrate Jenkins, and finally we had Avishai Ish-Shalom of Aleph VC and Nati Cohen of Here Technologies walk users through building their own Docker-like tool to better understand how containers work.

Track Talks

We had a really fantastic lineup of talks ranging from cloud multi-cluster management to containers to edge to machine learning and much more. Some of the highlights included JFrog’s lessons of moving apps to Kubernetes talk, Amazon’s building 12-factor serverless talk, and Google’s Istio+Kubernetes talk.

We also had speakers from many Israeli startups including Puresec, Rookout, Epsagon, Soluto, Twistlock, Iguazio, and JovianX.

Panel & Ignites

We ended the jam-packed day with a very interesting panel about cloud native technologies in production with panelists from Microsoft, LivePerson, Cloudify, and JFrog. The last two talks were 5-minute presentations from KubeMQ and Strattic.

Feel free to check out the agenda of talks for the event at this link.
Slides can be found here. Photos can be found here. We will update with videos when they become available.
This event was really a blast and we hope to see this community continue to grow in Israel. Looking forward to next year!
